Ogham Readings on Sundays

Hi Everyone,

 

I am happy to read your Ogham free of charge -- that's how I hone my divination skills. I take reading requests until 8pm Central Time (Chicago Illinois USA) on Sunday night. Though I am flattered that people want readings after the deadline, I decline reading requests made after 8pm Central Time on Sunday night without exception.

 

Please note I will be taking off the week of September 10, 2023.  Readings will resume as usual September 17, 2023.

Hi Kimberley,

For almost as long as I've been able to read, I've wanted to write stories. Occasionally, I've managed to fulfil this ambition. The one or two short stories I managed to finish writing were immensely satisfying to write, and from the feedback I received, quite promising - a handful of odd synchronicities contributed to my sense that this was a pursuit aligned with my Higher Self.

Since my brother's death in 2011, I have been able to write absolutely nothing in the way of fiction. I had one novel idea, which I repeatedly attempted to simply write out with no planning, which never got beyond a page or two. I scrapped that, then another idea began to emerge with far more promise - I decided to plan it out reasonably well in advance. It has a very compelling setting, a mythically-inspired framework, and a cinematic aesthetic.

However, the results have been kind of like that bit in the Simpsons where Bart tries to imagine the Itchy & Scratchy film he's been banned from seeing, and the two characters just stare at him and shrug. The tap is parched - occasionally a little sputter emerges, and I get hopeful that maybe we're on a roll, but nope - it goes back to zero.

I was wondering if your Ogham might have some advice on what is blocking my creative process when it comes to fiction, and how I can push beyond it.

My Ogham seem to think it is a matter of circumstances and needing to enforce some limits. They provide Koad or Confluence ill-dignified in regards to your writing. Koad is a snapshot of all that is going on in your life right now. As you mentioned, your grief over your brother has coincided with some writer's block. As painful as this might be, you might want to try writing your grief into a fictional character. Two different Australian films come to mind when I think of good horror stories where grief was a major force in shaping the plot: The Babadook and more recently, Talk To Me. I think my Ogham are suggesting some discursive meditation about grief and your brother's death. I also think they are suggesting you write a very tightly limited story or stories until you cycle through enough words to get the right ones out. I would also suggest standing on the shoulders of giants: with no intention of publishing it, see what happens when you paraphrase a favorite short story or novella line by line, adding your own characters and scenes. Is it still good? Where does it lead you? Koad talks about both going in too many directions, much like the junior composers I coach who want to cram a whole symphony of musical ideas and rhythms into a four minute song. Nope. Keep it basic and classic for now. It also talks about being confused about which direction to follow. Pick one for now and only do it. One story without what Crowley called "lust of result". (He wasn't always wrong or doing something dumb). If the story seems unfinished after 6000 words, then maybe you can extend it into a novel. My novel Forever Fifteen was intended to be a short story and wound up being about 75K words and two sequels. If all else fails, maybe try writing a comedy/parody first. That way you don't have to be perfect and the focus is less intense. The last piece of fiction I wrote was a very odd send up of the Twilight series and 50 Shades of Grey. If I had to describe it in one word, it would be "gratuitous".
