And yeah, they're going to wake up one day with a McMansion that is about to go into foreclosure and say "Why did I forgo raising my kids for this garbage?"
Sadly I doubt that: I think that requires more self awareness than I've seen from most of the upper classes right now, and I know way more than my fair share...
Fortunately, although I’m doing well now I’ve been poor (like Really Poor) before and it doesn’t scare me. I am so lucky to have a strong marriage (to a person whom I disagree with politically, even! But we don’t fight about it) and healthy kids. I’m paying off my debt so I can be ready because I also feel it coming in the air. I’m planting lots of edible plants and building up my fabrics and notions stashes for sewing garments. My husband is handy, so I think we will be fine, but most of these folks - whew its going to be a HUGE adjustment and I don’t think they are flexible enough to handle it.
If we get a Great Depression (and I hope we don't) in the next few years, I think a great many of them will commit suicide. The two men I mentioned upthread in the comments have contemplated suicide at the best of times. If SHTF and they become poor, they are both gay men who never had kids. There won't be anything left to live for.
Honestly? I almost welcome the coming recession/depression, strange as that is to say. Hard times make strong men and we don’t have too many of those around anymore. Maybe I wouldn’t hear so much construction noise when I’m trying to do my SOP in the woods, ha. I’m sure it would suck a lot and I would be broke as a joke, but the current situation is untenable. Something needs to give, or we are going to have increasing numbers of horrific natural disasters on our hands from the astral muck discharging. Katrina is when I realized there was a connection, though I didn’t know what it was until JMG explained it to me. Thank the gods for that man.
I have noticed construction on new houses and apartment complexes slowed down in a big way in 2020. Behind the building where I work, there's a formerly middle class, now upper middle class neighborhood where somebody built a fantastically ugly, modern McMansion. It's black and takes up an entire corner. There was a modest rental house there until late 2019. It has a four car garage. The family left two of the mature trees: as bald stumps. They hung a volleyball net between them. Of course it is a single family home and it is a white family with two young kids that had it custom built.
It strikes me as rather obscene to construct a McMansion after the events of 2020. 35% of small businesses in Illinois went under in 2020. Flaunting wealth is extremely unwise. I have been reading a bio of Marie Antoinette and the French royals had the same "but everyone does it this way" cluelessness as the salary class and their McMansions. Marie Antoinette wasn't the narcissistic lesbian nymphomaniac monster as caricatured in the libelles. She was actually a devoted mother. They tortured her little boy to death and he died broken and insane while imprisoned. Compare Ghislaine Maxwell, who is woken up every fifteen minutes in her prison cell (tortured). It is cruel and unusual punishment for sure, but when you hear the accounts of how she tricked school age girls and then watched or participated while Jeffrey Epstein raped them, it doesn't seem unjust. The family in the ugly black McMansion is more M. Antoinette than G. Maxwell: innocent and vacuous.
