I have changed things up a bit and to give myself more time to complete my next book, Sacred Beauty, I am putting up an Open Post on the second week of the month.

One of my favorite pastimes is to play a game with Google Maps of dropping a pin in a random location and viewing pictures of other countries. I used Random.org this time to choose for me, and it chose what looks like a rural street in Brazil. Damn, Brazil is huge! It is 90% of the size of the United States.

This post will be open until I post the next one in June.

We will hope second try's the charm:

I am personally very fond of these coordinates: 12°05'12.7"S 77°04'06.1"W

Not random: I've walked by there many times, and the whole neighborhood had a great vibe. I virtually wander the streets around there via google maps when I'm feeling nostalgic :)

I am starting to wonder if anyone else has thought through the implications of a possible major political development. I saw in the news in Canada a few days ago a massive amount of Hantavirus material, talking about how contact tracing is starting up, and it looked very reminiscent to me of the last bit of February and first bit of March of 2020 with Covid. The Europeans are freaking out, but so far, I'm not seeing much here in Illinois to make me think lockdowns are coming. This might change, but I'm not so sure.

I'm pretty sure that 2020 style lockdowns only work in the US with the implicit backing of the federal government, and despite the many reasons I have to dislike Trump, he got burned pretty badly by that in 2020, and took a lot of steps that seem intended to avoid that happening again, so right now I don't expect to see 2020 style lockdowns in the US; but I think it's reaching near certainty that they'll happen in Canada, if they haven't already. It's been a few days since I checked the news, so it's possible they've already gone down that road.

I'm starting to wonder if there'll be an Atlantic divide here: Europe seems likely to go down the lockdown road as well; and if this is the case, then I'd expect Canada to fall with the Europeans, given their government has very strong pro-European sentiment. Right now I figure there's about a 10% chance of the Canadian government trying to repeat 2020, while the American governments, even in deep blue states, don't. I have no idea how that'll play out, but it seems surprisingly likely to me that that would be extremely unstable and explosive...

Maybe Ontario and Quebec and the Maritime provinces. I don't think people in the Canadian prairie provinces want a repeat of the lockdown, and if the Canadian federal government tries to enforce lockdown on the prairie we might just see Wexit happen for real.

This is one of the things I'm wondering about: just how much push back will happen within Canada? I'd wager there'll be some, but if the US remains open, it'll be very intense, especially if places like California and New York stay open.

Also, how much do you think the Canadian government really cares about opinions from anyone outside of the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor? The fact that it'll be extremely unpopular in Western Canada does not mean it won't happen...

I fully expect another vaccine push; and I also can tell that the same idiots who tried the 2020 lockdowns are salivating at the chance to try again. At the moment, it looks like they've been neutralized, but we'll see. I'm still giving it about a 40% chance that at least the blue states end up under lockdowns of some form again: much higher than I'd like, but still less than 50%, and I don't expect it to be quite as severe as 2020, but again, I do admit that's possible.

Israel's influence on Trump has been, to put it mildly, disturbing, but I'm not sure if they care about lockdowns in the US. They might, but I'm not sure they'll bother to interfere; and assuming Trump is at all aware of what happened in 2020, which he seems to be, I'd expect him to fight it pretty hard. So while I still put a decent chance of lockdowns of some form happening, I don't expect a repeat of 2020.
