At least they haven't (yet) blown it off the face of the planet in spite... Yeah, "joyless" hits the target, I think. My husband was raised in a peculiarly joyless sect of Christianity called Seventh Day Adventism. They weren't allowed to listen to or perform most popular music, to see movies, or to celebrate most holidays, and if there was a celebration, it had to be dedicated to their angry version of God. Even they knew better than to prohibit music in church, though. For the record, I believe the aforementioned stewards of the Hagia Sophia and Christianity are well on their way to becoming minority religions, but Christianity looks as if it will get to the finish line ahead of the competition.
