When I pray, I pray to Father God and Mother Goddess, Whom I conceptualize to be the masculine and feminine polarities of the Universal Spirit (Whom one might also refer to as "the Holy Spirit"). That is a bit more nebulous than invoking a specific deity, but it is less intrusive because the Universe is always listening, and so prayer to the Universal Spirit is simply a way of indicating a priority communication. When praying for other people, I don't believe you need to ask their permission just as long the only thing you are petitioning for is positive, healing energy being sent their way. Just as it is always wrong to curse somebody, it is always right to bless somebody. Based on cases where I know there was either failure or success, my approach seems to work fairly well.
