I noticed the smell--->etheric thing in our last house. With three kids around, random relatives dropping in all the time, and just one small bathroom, it would get funky in a hurry. But-- and here's the funny part-- the decor was almost irrelevant here. The house was a work-in-progress. We ripped out a decrepit shower stall and replaced it with a proper tub, but the size difference meant that for quite a long time (repairs happened as budget allowed), there was a 10-inch strip of wall missing where you could see right through into the pantry closet. The paint was a hot mess: peeling blue on the ceiling, sort of pink on the walls, hard-water stains that would not come off the ugly yellow sink for anything... just hideous. So: not an aesthetically nice place on any level.
But on days when I'd clean the bathroom-- I scrubbed it with vinegar-- it would suddenly be the nicest room in the house, for about two days. Like, you'd walk in, and just want to *stay* a while. The only really obvious difference would be that it didn't smell, and there wasn't toothpaste on the mirror. But there it was. Despite being windowless, it felt *bright*. Best seat in the house.
