(OP) I think what you did is a great idea. Things like that really make a difference.
I actually got started thinking along those lines back in 2011 when the Occupy movement was being talked about everywhere and still in its early stages. I know things later went off the rails, but what that meant in my small city at the time was talking about local credit unions and buying things made either locally or at least nationally. It took me several years of gradually giving things up one by one, but I now shop completely locally except for one shipment a year that comes from another country. I also sold my car (again took me several years to transition, and moving closer to public transit) and I'm currently on a no-flying self-challenge: two years next month. Thus when JMG's writings showed up in my life 3-4 years ago, I was already trying to move in that direction and he put words to things I'd been nebulously feeling for a long time.
