I have never lived in the Midwest, but through tv, movies, and books, and whatever transitory experience I might have gotten out of brief stopovers at O'Hare, I believe I intuited your statement that the spirit of the land in in the Midwest is much more pragmatic than the coasts.
Which leads me to ask you and anyone else who would like to comment (as I have a hard time articulating my own thoughts about this, though I live on the West Coast): What are your impressions of the spirits of the lands of the West and East coasts?
