Empathy has been weaponized to an incredible degree - the system of current "progressive" politics is founded almost entirely on appeals to compassion. "Your ancestors owned slaves!" "You're killing Grandma!" The value people assign to empathy has been relentlessly exploited and on a subconscious level many people are beginning to understand this.
This epitomizes to me what you describe as toxic femininity. I've heard stories from cities where homelessness is becoming a severe problem but anyone who brings it up is targeted with relentless hate and vitriol by people who consider themselves champions of the downtrodden - whose "compassionate values" give them a license to tear into anyone who disagrees.
