OK, yes, I remember that. He is always careful to mention that collapse doesn't happen evenly or all at once. There are plenty of abandoned shopping malls and housing subdivisions in my area of the Midwest as we speak, yet some moron always thinks it is a good idea to build a new one. In the worst years of the Black Death, there were still some areas of Paris that were oases of prosperity and decent health. As they say in real estate: Location, location, location.
Lots of people I knew moved out of Illinois in 2020-2022. My mechanic moved to northern Wisconsin, my former accountant and my piano dealer took their entire family to Kentucky, the owner of the cafe I sing at moved to Missouri, and one student and her family moved to Texas. Sometimes the grass actually is greener on the other side and alternately sometimes moving creates more problems than it solves. You can only run away from society's problems to the limit of dependence upon that society to survive. The self-sufficient doomstead in the deep wilderness is a mistake. An even worse idea is the self-sufficient commune. People often overlook just how much of their survival depends on the commonwealth.
