The same as a beginning musician who can barely make a note on the guitar, horn, singing, etc... lots of PRACTICE! For now, stick to "safer" trees such as anything related to pines, maples, or oaks, or if you are in the tropics, cedars and gum trees (fragrant trees), especially Eucalyptus. Avoid sycamores, elders, and acacias. Once a day is not too much. Once a week is fine too. Whatever you can manage. The trees want to talk to you. Collectively, the time has come to repair the relationship between humans and trees and just like with musical practice, we've all got to start somewhere.
I have a drive-by relationship with an oak tree in my neighborhood. I've never had the pleasure of doing the ritual with it because it is in someone's yard. Every time I drive by it (usually commuting to work) I say "Hey hey tree! Looking great today" and wish that it has a good day. I know it sounds ridiculous but beginning the relationship really is that simple. You don't have to approach the spirits with gravitas.
