I've been contemplating for months to start a new career as a merchant marine on the Great Lakes, although there are a few other options, on inland rivers or internationally over the oceans. There are several things enticing about the opportunity, but also the huge drawback of being around from family for months at a time. Thus far, I've done everything needed to get my merchant marine credential and begin the career aside from submitting the merchant marine credential application. My question is, will being a merchant marine be good for my family and me? I am curious if it'd make any difference as well with the different options for positions since inland rivers are away for a much shorter time, Great Lakes for a couple months and international for possibly a whole year.
