I think all of the major religions (but especially the monotheist ones) are extremely threatened by competent, sane occultism and solo mysticism in the same way conventional allopathic medicine is threatened by herbalism, alternative therapies, and homeopathy. If people start figuring out how to get in touch with the gods on their own, suddenly they don't need the middleman, nor are they inclined to pay him!
