I think it's as simple as the "one astral pyramid rules above all" phenomenon that Kimberly Steele loves to talk about on her Dreamwidth. People find out that something is effective for solving one problem and then they generalise it far beyond where it is appropriate and start claiming it is the universal thing that will solve every problem.
