This might be the thread to share a wild speculation I have about about the whole Religion of Vaccine. This could be WAY off, but indulge me for a moment....

I remember at one point, I think on JMG's open thread, people were talking about the God of Smallpox being angry that his disease was eradicated in the wild, and fear of what the repercussions might be - e.g., that there would somehow be a return of the dreaded smallpox. It was then that I thought, hey wait - maybe we're already living with a god's revenge and don't realize it?

The whole concept of vaccination was originally invented for smallpox - which evidence does seems to indicate was, in fact, a very dangerous virus. And the thing is, the vaccination/inoculation approach does seem to actually work on smallpox. So let's just say, for the sake of argument, that the story we've heard around smallpox is essentially true - that smallpox is very dangerous, the smallpox vaccine actually works and helped get rid of smallpox, and that, generally speaking, the risk of the smallpox vaccine is less than the risk of the disease. Let's just say all of this is true, FOR SMALLPOX.

But what we've seen over the last century or so is an explosion not only in the number of vaccines given, but also the growth of what feels like a religion - all vaccines are miraculous gifts from Science, and anyone who questions any vaccine is an ignorant, science-denying heretic. And, as part of this, they seem to believe that every disease is just like smallpox - the disease in question really is dangerous, the vaccine works, the risk of the vaccine is smaller than the risk of the disease, and if we could just get enough people vaccinated, the disease would be eradicated. I call it the "every virus is smallpox" mindset.

But of course, none of that is true. All viruses are different, and an approach that might have worked for smallpox might not be effective, useful, or wise when applied to other viruses.

So here's where my crazy speculation comes in....

What if we do have an angry God of Smallpox, and what if there is an angry diety behind the vax worship? Could it be that the God of Smallpox is exacting revenge not by trying to re-release his disease into the world, but rather my somehow making silly humans treat anything and everything like smallpox, thereby sickening and killing themselves and their children with their vax-worship hubris?

Like I said - wild speculation. But there's a part of me wants to ask if you would do an ogham divination on that theory next time you're taking requests.
