It's a good hypothesis, but it is hit or miss when put into practice. For instance, Renaissance poisoners would often administer small doses of poison to themselves so they would develop a tolerance and be able to poison a glass of wine, take a gulp, and then hand the glass over to the intended victim. I'll guess they regularly poisoned themselves.
