I'm French Canadian on my father's side but never thought of myself as French or any other ethnicity for that matter. Years ago in the place I used to work, a local politician came around gladhanding everybody. When he heard my last name, he immediately brightened and said "Ah, a Franco-American!". When he said that, I drew a blank because the only Franco-American I knew of was a brand of spaghetti sauce at the grocery store. It took a minute to catch on to what he meant. LOL!
