This is a serviceberry: https://www.laurensgardenservice.com/serviceberry-maryland-native-plants-that-thrive/ From what DuckDuckGo tells me, it looks different than a nanny berry. We had fruit this year, three years after planting, but the birds got it all first. The paw paws are super easy to grow - of course, we don't have fruit yet, but the trees themselves are thriving with almost no attention in clay soil.
My tomatoes didn't do well either, but my parents' (in Ohio) were tremendously productive. Cabbages and broccoli were infested with cabbage worms. So far we've had the best luck with lettuce, carrots, okra, strawberries, onions, and garlic. Oh, and a pumpkin which we did not plant but quickly took over the entire backyard!
