I'm in the middle of a garden learning curve too. We have a massive black walnut tree right next to our house, which can make vegetable and fruit gardening a bit tricky. Raspberries withered quickly from the jugalone - but I have heard black raspberries can thrive with black walnut trees (and they're my favorite anyway), so I'm hoping to put some in next year. Right now we've got paw paws, serviceberry, and hazelnut in the tree department and I'm working through which vegetables like it here. NOT beets, it seems - two disappointing years in a row!
